Oppose Dept Sustainability

Resolution Opposing the Department of Environmental Sustainability

When our city that we reside in contemplates an action that will have serious negative consequences for all the
residents of that city; it is incumbent upon us as citizens of this city, to express our concerns concerning this
action.

WHEREAS, our Mayor, our city Manager and several of our City Council members have proposed the funding
and authorization of a Department of Environmental Sustainability into the upcoming City of Corpus Christi
budget proposal; and

WHEREAS, the proponents of such a department have stated that it will be tasked with solving a very broad
range of supposed problems which will require such a department to have extremely extensive powers; and

WHEREAS, our current level of economic development, which according to US census statistics is 60-70%
below the average level of the United States of America and the State of Texas, sustaining our city at such a
level is highly questionable; and

WHEREAS, authorizing and funding a department of environmental sustainability will unnecessarily limit our
city's future economic development by adding an entirely new level of approval granting bureaucracy; and

WHEREAS, there are already dozens of existing Federal, State, County and City entities that address
environmental concerns in Corpus Christi, this department will only duplicate existing bureaucracy; and

WHEREAS, in the last five years the number of civilian positions in our city bureaucracy has exploded by
adding 638 new positions and our city budget has doubled in the last ten years; additional unnecessary spending
and staffing is questionable at best; and

WHEREAS, there is absolutely no scientific or economic evidence to show that any measures, not already in
effect or overseen by an existing entity, that would originate with a Department of Environmental Sustainability
would have any positive impact exceeding the negative impact such contemplated actions would entail in the
lives of the citizens of Corpus Christi; now

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Nueces County Republican Party STRENUOUSLY Opposes any
attempt by any elected or appointed public official to fund, give authority to, or staff the department of
environmental sustainability or similar such entity in Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi should lead the way in
Texas by rejecting the non-scientific, economically wasteful, unneeded, and devoid of positive impact entity
known as a Department of Environmental Sustainability.
